What is Arthritis?
Arthritis is a condition which causes pain and inflammation in the joints and can range from the relatively mild to very severe. There are two types of the condition:
Osteoarthritis
This is the most common form of the condition and it is more often seen in those over fifty. It affects the smooth cartilage lining of the joint and eventually leads to swelling which makes movement difficult and painful. It is most usually found in the hands, spine, knees and hips.
Rheumatoid
This affects around 400,000 people in the UK The immune system targets affected joints which causes pain and swelling. It usually starts between the age of forty to fifty and women are three times more likely to suffer. It is a complex condition which needs careful management.
