Our Services - Headaches
Headaches affect 47% of the global population on a regular basis. Some people suffer from them monthly, weekly and sometimes even daily and the headache can range from being a nuisance, to being completely debilitating, disrupting your ability to drive, work, concentrate, do daily chores or even stand upright. Many people are taking increasing doses of medication with less and less effect over time, which is concerning to the GP's and patients alike.
But it does not have to be this way!
Research suggests headaches and migraines can originate from the muscles, joints and ligaments in your upper neck. It is possible to experience headaches and migraines without feeling any neck pain. At Back in Motion our physiotherapists are specialised in being able to diagnose whether the cause of your headaches/migraine is indeed your neck.
Back in Motion therapists have been trained by the Dean Watson Headache institute, in Australia, which is world renowned for identifying the role of the neck in headache and migraine pain.

What to expect?
A full headache history will be taken to identify the pattern of your headache presentation as this is the key to indicating the possible causes. Understand your triggers and what treatment methods you are currently using, or have been using in the past, and the effect of these in controlling your symptoms.
It is vital within the physical examination to look at the upper and lower neck, upper back and the arm movements to understand the muscular support structures for the neck too. You physio will be trying to very temporarily reproduce and/or lesson symptoms of your headache, to establish which structures are involved.
Treatment options:
The good news is that we teach you and even a family member if you choose, as many self help techniques so you treat and eventually manage as much of your own treatment as possible to reduce the frequency and intensity of your headaches or migraines.
Depending on your presentation, how tight muscles, your postural type or how restricted the joint movements of your upper neck may indicate the need for hands on treatment to work alongside the self help plan. Your physio can discuss how many sessions are anticipated based on your assessment findings.
Treatments can include:
- Joint mobilisation and stretching
- Acupuncture or acupressure
- Strengthening exercises
- Postural re-education
- Massage
